Brighton ANZ to close

By Andrew King NEW BRIGHTON residents have been dealt another blow as a second bank announces it will be permanently closing its doors. ANZ on Seaview Rd will amalgamate with The Palms branch in Shirley on January 26, meaning the area will only have one bank left - New Brighton NZ Post & Kiwibank in the Brighton Mall. It comes after Westpac announced last year Poto Willams it will be closing its doors in New Brighton, midFebruary. PLAYGROUND COST Last week Pegasus Post reported that the new beachside playground on Marine Pde, New Brighton, cost $8 million to build. This was incorrect. The $8 million is the total amount budgeted for the playground, a $1 million contribution to the future rebuild of the New Brighton Surf Lifesaving Club and coastal protection work. The coastal protection work will happen alongside the hot water salt pools project. A Development Christchurch spokesman said playground costings were currently being compiled. Pascal is an affectionate and loving animal, according to SPCA southern region general manager Barry Helem. But the furry feline has been without a home for two months. Mr Helem said Pascal was found lost in Ashburton and was taken to a vet clinic as she had an injured tongue and some dental

issues. She was collected by the SPCA ambulance and had a few teeth removed as well as other treatments to help her heal. Pascal then went to a foster home where her foster parents said she loved “rolling around, chilling out in front of the fan

This total is an 11 per cent increase over the same period last year,” he said. Pascal is one of about 20 cats SPCA Canterbury is currently trying to rehome. The organisation has 321 animals on-site at present and 139 animals in foster homes. Adoption fees for an adult cat like Pascal are $150, kittens $250, adult dogs $250, puppies $350 and rabbits $50. In a bid to continue rehoming animals, SPCA Canterbury has a Facebook page which profiles different animals in their care. The page has more than 22,000 followers. SPCA is a charity which helps protect animals that are sick, injured, lost, abused or simply abandoned. Rowers bounce back By Andrew King AFTER ALMOST being killed by a 30m tree on the Avon River last week, two Shirley Boys’ High rowers helped their squad to fourth in the Canterbury championships. Finley Ocheduszko Brown and Cameron Maughan were part of the under-16 quad, which included Lucas MacDonald, Jack Hearn and Cody Docherty. They narrowly missed out on a podium finish at Lake Ruataniwha, Twizel, on Sunday. The duo were part of a team, including Liam Whitaker, David Brown and Reuben Bannon, who were training last week

Three boats crewed by SBHS students, rowing for the Avon Club, made the under-16 final with Lachlan Nicholas, Matthew Smith, Scott Shackleton, Alan Hammersley and Josh Dolan winning gold, and another crew finishing seventh. The winners were using a boat borrowed from the Avon Club. “We don’t have the budget of other schools, we don’t have the long history, we are punching above our weight and have developed a strong core group,” he said. The under-17 crew, which would have been using the smashed boat, were lent a boat by Christ’s College and made the final, but finished mid-pack. Wilson-Pyne said the whole squad was a bit behind where they would like to be and said there were a few Christmas dinners that needed to be burnt off. “We will flog them for the next week to build into the South Island champs held next week,” he said.

Red zone rabbits spared . . . for now By Bridget Rutherford RABBITS THAT gained quite the audience for living in the middle of busy roundabouts in the red zone have been spared for now. More than 20 rabbits, some of which are black in colour, have been spotted on the roundabout at Anzac Drive, Travis and Frosts Rd, and the junction of Anzac Drive and New Brighton Rd. But they caused traffic concerns, with motorists driving slowly to look at them and others parking and crossing Anzac Drive to get to the roundabout. In November, the New Zealand Transport Agency said the highway maintenance team was looking to put a rabbit control operation in place to deal with the safety issue. That may have included cull-

But it appears the bunnies will likely be able to live out their days

on their roundabouts. “At this stage the transport agency is not proposing to do anything about the rabbits which are sometimes seen on the state highway roundabouts through Brighton/Burwood,” an NZTA spokeswoman told the Pegasus Post. “We continue to advise people not to be distracted while driving and to put their own and other road users’ safety first.”

Readers respond to the article about the lack of rubbish bins at the New Brighton seaside playground Alexia Chisholm – How about creating less rubbish? Eat things that aren’t in packets, use reusable drink bottles and bring a lunch box and take it home to wash. I can’t remember the last time I had a need to use a bin in more than 10 years of taking my kids to playgrounds. Not the council’s issue, people need to be less waste-producing. When the bin is emptied it still has to go somewhere i.e landfill, so providing more bins just encourages more waste. Carla Williams – Bins in New Brighton have always been a problem. A few more bins is fine but the council still need to clear them more often in summer. Recycle and rubbish bins are needed around recreational areas. Roast the capsicums over the hot grill of the barbecue until the skin has blackened then remove from the heat, place in a plastic bag and loosely tie shut. Leave for 30min, then remove the capsicums from the bag. Peel and discard the charred skin and seeds. Roughly chop the flesh and put in a bowl with the oil. Mix corn of cob with finely chopped onion, spring onions, garlic and ginger, then mix into the capsicum. Add the lime juice and soy sauce. Finely chop the beans and combine everything. Store in a jar in the fridge for up to a week.

Eight BMX podiums for North Avon club By Andrew King THE North Avon Christchurch BMX Club had a strong showing at the South Island championships with eight podium finishes. Held at the weekend in Kyle Park, Hornby, the 46-strong team competed in almost every category available from ages five to 50-plus. Sebastian Stettner won the 8-year-old boys section,

Holly Tribble the 7-8 girls, and Connor Mahan the 17-24 males 20 inch. Mauricio Limari was second in the 40-44 men’s 20 inch. Jesse James Green was third in the 13-16 men’s cruiser, Nick Sinclair third in the 15 boys 20 inch, Johannes Stettner third in the 30-39 men’s 20 inch, Tony Thornley third in the 40-44 men’s 20 inch and Ronan McKersey third in the 8-12 cruiser mixed.

The club also had 21 top eight finishes. Club secretary Christina Freeman said it was one of their most successful results at an event.“I am hoping the sport will just keep getting stronger out here. It was pretty wet Saturday morning, so we started at 4pm. When Sunday rolled around it was great,” she said. Heavy rain meant a helicopter was brought in to hover over the track and dry it for the event.

Excitement building along with new campus

Enormous progress is being made in the construction of a new campus for Avonside Girls’ High School and Shirley Boys’ High School. Some 5000 piles have now been driven into the ground at the site in QEII Park. The state of the art campus is on track to be opened for term two of 2019.

Shirley Intermediate When Shirley Intermediate School’s two swimming pools were earthquake damaged the SIS Board of Trustees, having found no likely help sources, undertook costly repairs. Now, after six summers their pupils continue to reap the benefits. In addition to swimming almost daily, pupils can also join the endurance club. Perhaps you sit a lot for work and you were on the go or, you are normally more active and the holiday break was more sedentary. Either way the sooner you pay attention to these signals the easier it will be to deal with it. So what can you do to ward off pain and stiffness and boost your energy and alertness? 10 simple stretching exercises at your desk that will release tension from head to toe. They take only a few minutes. Set the alarm on your cell phone or computer to go off every hour to remind you it’s time to get up and stretch. Just stand up and sit down - no hands If you stand up and sit down (over and over) without using your hands it can be a challenge, do it while you’re on the phone; no one will know. Shrug your shoulders - to release the neck and shoulders Inhale deeply and shrug your shoulders, lifting them high up to your ears. Hold. Release and drop. Repeat three times. Loosen the hands with air circles Clench both fists, stretching both hands
